this country retreat in japan’s nagano prefecture has been constructed in accordance with a computer algorithm that was able to determine the most suitable form of the home in relation to its setting. architect sota ichikawa of local studio doublenegatives utilized a multi agent system (MAS) to take into account the site’s undulations, adjacent tree and rock positions and access to daylight, through inputting the relevant local conditions as part of the architectural plan.

internally, the home’s two storeys are connected to both the low and high sides of the site, while glazing surrounds the perimeter of the design, offering continual external views. a sheltered patio is created at the threshold of the home through a horizontally folding doorway that leads inside the dwelling.
