canadian architecture studio dubbeldam has been commissioned by a local developer to create a concept design for a residential scheme tailored to the needs of outdoor activity enthusiasts. situated on the shores of bennett lake in carcross, yukon, the program called for 1,000 – 1,200 square foot dwellings that had views to the lake and to the mountains beyond. owing to the wide variety of outdoor activities available in the region, the target demographic included active professionals, retirees, and vacationers.

while the aim was to build something both distinctive and innovative, the budget for each unit was constrained by the remote location and the economy. the site also presented several challenges: a rolling topography, wind erosion, and natural vegetation that required a sensitive approach to both the project’s development and construction. the proposed dwellings are designed to sit lightly, appearing to float over the terrain so as not to detract from the landscape they inhabit. the units are constructed on two long concrete grade beams supported by helical piers along their lengths, minimizing the impact on the site while nestling into the shifting sands.

an extruded wood frame encompasses the dwelling and an outdoor storage area, but extends over the façade to protect from snow and blowing sands. the long, covered outdoor area for storage of sports equipment and firewood is sheltered by a screened wall of timber boards that allow natural light to penetrate the space. the second floor spans over the storage area to allow for additional living accommodation. the residences are clad in a local red cedar that ages over time, allowing the structure to blend naturally with the landscape.
