a swirling walkway by Takashi Suo

Japanese architect Takashi Suo, founder of kyoto-based studio SUO, has completed a partially elevated walkway overlooking a spectacular mountaintop of the Seto Inland Sea (see previous coverage here). Dubbed ‘Yashima Mountain-top Park’, the structure meanders through the verdant landscape of Kagawa, Japan, forming an irregularly shaped enclosure with a continuous path that wraps Yashima National Park.

Functioning as an observatory and local landmark, the scheme accommodates a multi-purpose hall for holding exhibitions, events, or conferences. Mimicking the contours of the mountains, the gentle curves foster a feeling of exploration reinforced through the generous use of transparent surfaces. Wandering through delicate turns directs the visitors’ eyes naturally, inviting them to relish the exceptional scenery and ultimately feel closer to nature, even if they are indoors. elevated walkway by takashi suo meanders through national park in japan all images by Yashima Navi

Yashima Mountain-top Park IN JAPAN

‘It took six and a half years from the start of the design in 2016, but it’s finally completed,‘ mentions the architect in an Instagram post. The continuous walkway designed by Takashi Suo aimed to create an architecture that seamlessly blends into its natural setting, stimulating walkers’ senses and curiosity. Snaking through the verdant landscape of the park, the scheme celebrates nature from each direction, as its diaphanous body enables a see-through experience on the lush oasis.

Standing on an elevated point, visitors can notice the flowing curve of the rooftop across. The roof tiles are made of Aji Ishi, a kind of grey granite produced in Mure-Cho and Aji-Cho, towns adjacent to Yashima. Up to 30,000 tiles were constructed and delivered by the local Sanuki Stone Processing Association for the realization of ‘Yashima Mountain-top Park’.

Each turn conceals surprises and brings you a step closer to nature. By narrowing and widening the gallery, the design team steers your glance innately, and suddenly, the lush terrain spreads before your eyes. The treetops come into your peripheral view, and you feel like you were walking in the forest.
