elon musk's prefab rented house costs just $50,000

last year, elon musk followed his promise of own no house and sold nearly all of his properties, except for a bay area events house. ‘I sold my main residence in los angeles a few months ago, and now we are selling my other homes; I will have almost no property of great value other than company shares. I only need a house for my children, and I can still rent one,’ musk told german newspaper die welt. 

following that, musk tweeted this: my primary home is literally a ~$50k house in boca chica / starbase that I rent from SpaceX. it’s kinda awesome though.

after digging hard, musk’s followers were able to discover that his housing unit in starbase, texas, is a boxabl casita, a foldable dwelling that unfolds into a prefabricated home. the unit has a 20×20 footprint, 9.5ft high ceilings and comes complete with fridge, stove, washer/dryer, bathroom, kitchen, and more. built using a new construction method that makes them resistant to fire, floods, rot, pests, high winds and more, the boxabl casita is more durable and efficient than traditional homes.

teslarati, who was first to discover musk’s tiny home said that, ‘boxabl appears to be a company that is very fond of elon musk and his ventures, with the startup showcasing one of its casita units being configured for use in mars as possible living quarters for astronauts. more recently, boxabl also pitched the idea of using its prefab housing units for the expansion of starbase, allowing the location to grow with housing units that are just as potentially disruptive as SpaceX’s rockets and tesla’s electric vehicles.’
