norwegian architecture studio erling berg presents its newly completed kvitfjell cabin. the dwelling is nestled atop the kvitfjell — meaning ‘white mountain’ — in norway, and looks outward across distant views of the surrounding mountains and the horizon to toward the south-west. stretching 26 meters (over 85 feet) and built entirely out of local pine wood, the narrow cabin celebrates traditional methods of construction. the timber facades are expressed with an array of vertical siding elements which introduce a rhythmic textural quality.

erling berg wraps the walls and roof of its kvitfjell cabin in untreated wood panels that will naturally grey over time. the entire interior is wrapped in white oiled pine, keeping the spaces light during the darker winter hours. every main room in the cabin opens outward to a view looking south-west, following the sun. meanwhile, bedrooms and bathrooms are kept discreet, with storage in the walls, leaving more space for the open kitchen, dining and family room. following the gently sloping topography of the plot, the main living spaces and the en-suite are lowered into the landscape. these spaces are expressed with vaulted ceilings, creating a spacious atmosphere where the cold nature outside connects with the warm interior through the larger glass openings.
