‘erpingham’ is a prototype house by MSG architecture located in hamilton hill, 10 mins south of the port city of fremantle, western australia. the brief was to create a compact, sustainable and easily replicable house form for perth’s changing suburban environment. the modular lightweight construction uses common place materials and passive solar design which minimises the long therm costs of the building. this puts the project within the reach of most people, making it a financial and environmentally sustainable alternative to the project home market.

particularly suited to the increasing density of perth, ‘erpingham’ has a base floor area of 150m2 which is easily adapted to suit different site situations and different client needs. the house consists of three bedrooms and two bathrooms that sit over a semi-open plan kitchen, living and dining space. the open plan layout reflects modern day living requirements, through the use of interconnected rooms where one can move effortlessly from kitchen area to lounge space. a single block of wood separates the ground floor into two parts – a cooking and dinning area and a relaxing sitting room that looks out onto the studio space outside.

the outer and inner space both work in union reflecting an honest, straightforward vision through compact features and easy living conditions. the project expresses a conscientious practicality, creating a blank canvas in which the modern family can make their own.
