with the design of its vibrant CVC house, mexico-based practice estudio MMX first articulates the residential project’s exterior gardens, terraces, and patios. the conditioned interiors are organized around a primary, centralized patio, as required by the client, as a way to generate a dialogue between the built space and the open space. this curated sequence of open spaces introduces varying degrees of intimacy, and allow the occupant to pass gradually from the wide, open atmosphere of the street, through to the green space at the back of the plot.

estudio MMX initially plans the CVC house within a nine square grid, with regular volumes distributed evenly around a centralized open-air patio. in this way, the project intertwines two units that can be inhabited independently. the regulated logic is expressed along the interior patio with large openings that follow the rhythm of the grid. with broad spans of uninterrupted concrete and minimal geometries, the detailing at a finer resolution is emphasized. bare, unadorned walls are outlined with narrow channels of white river rock, while the seams of the floor finishing are left exposed.

estudio MMX expresses the house as a porous massing with a compact program. the design team ensures that the interior spaces maintain an optimal condition of natural sunlight and views without compromising the privacy of its occupants and without reducing the open areas. the house’s patios and gardens are prioritized the same as the conditioned areas. the use of red pigmented concrete in both the structure and finishing allows the team to generate pergolas, slabs, beams and homogeneous walls, that emphasizes the integral nature of the project.
