Bernaung House rises in Tanggerang

Bernaung House by RAD+ar architects stands amid the bustling urban landscape of Tanggerang, Indonesia, framed by verdant surroundings, showcasing the simplicity of living harmoniously with nature. Stretching diagonally across the site, the design establishes a visual dialogue with the lush gardens that envelop it, providing panoramic views at either end of the structure.

The residence redefines sustainability achieving comfort with minimal energy consumption. The design reorganizes the daily activities of its occupants, weaving them into a seamless loop beneath an expansive roof that hovers above. At its core, an atrium not only serves as a visual anchor but also acts as a natural wind chimney, offering cross-ventilation that keeps the interiors cool and fresh.

Inside, the roof’s inner ceiling is adorned with monochrome timber, serving as a canvas for the ever-changing interplay of natural light and shadow throughout the day. When night falls, it transforms into a captivating facade, illuminating the internal spaces.

RAD+ar follows passive design principles

The entire building is strategically rotated to achieve optimal north-south orientation, harnessing abundant natural light while minimizing heat intrusion. The center of the roof features cleverly subtracted sections for skylights and ventilation, allowing hot air to escape, thus maintaining a comfortable internal climate.

The design team follows an innovative approach for the layout of the single-story house, including a mezzanine level, creating a micro-climate within the 400 sqm site. With the integration of diagonal walls and micro-gardens, the design unlocks the potential of passive design principles, taking advantage of various air openings and pressure differentials. The project harnesses tropical elements to achieve living comfort with minimal energy consumption.
