House NF’s Unique Location Captures the surrounding scenery

Didonè Comacchio Architects designs House NF which resides on the outskirts of Bassano del Grappa in Italy. Located at the foot of the Alps, the house overlooks to the north of the entrance to the Valsugana, between the western slope of Monte Grappa, recently listed as a UNESCO heritage site, and the eastern slope of the Asiago plateau. To the south, above the crowns of a long olive grove, the historic center of Bassano del Grappa can be seen. The project’s starting concept forms around capturing part of the greenery present through the courtyards in the basement of the building. The first courtyard stands at the entrance area and the second towards the garden. The integration of greenery within the built structure functions as a visual filter in the entrance area, ensuring privacy, and frames the outdoor area along with the garden and olive grove.

open and closed facades highlight the house’s dual character

Atop the green roof, a modest structure emerges, housing a small study that opens onto a panoramic terrace. When viewed from the street, the building appears closed, utilizing a wooden slat partition to create a ‘see-through’ effect that provides privacy for the owners. In contrast, the garden-facing side, shielded by the building’s volumes, offers expansive views, extending towards the long olive grove, which is also incorporated into the interior spaces of the Girono area. The design team at Didonè Comacchio Architects chooses exposed concrete for the construction of the entire enclosure. The lower 2.7 meters are textured, having been cast on wooden formworks, and this same texture is echoed in the sliding wooden shutters. Beyond 2.7 meters, the concrete surface becomes smooth, emphasizing the house’s dual character, with the material transitions reflecting the more introspective ground floor and the more open first floor.
