an addition to ‘casa bahia azul‘ in los vilos in chile, architect felipe assadi has also designed the adjacent ‘painter’s studio’- a submerged concrete retreat on the same coastal plot as the home. embedded into the hill and the surroundings, the long rectangular space is entered via a floating staircase, leading down to the generous open-plan area. kept minimal, the room is used for canvas arrangement, storage of equipment, the activity of painting itself, all the while, looking out the exterior landscape. a light well between the concrete ceiling and wall illuminates the left side, meanwhile a floor to ceiling glass panel opens up to a balcony framing uninterrupted views of the chilean coast.
