located in the northern portuguese town of guarda, this two storey residential dwelling has been crafted to combine rural and urban lifestyles. designed by local architects filipe pina and maria inês costa, ‘JA house’ is formed of two separate structures that are connected internally. a stone volume represents the existing building, while a concrete insertion has been added to provide sufficient floor space for a family of four.

in order to bring daylight into the center of the home, two significant voids were created: the recessed entrance providing access to the property, and an external courtyard positioned at the heart of the plan. the program is spread across two levels with primary living and dining accommodation at ground floor level and the bedrooms and library positioned above.
