russia’s bid for the 2014 olympics was part of a wider strategy to ensure that the country is able to host major sporting events in the future. the challenge facing populous was to persuade the international olympic committee (IOC) that russia had the vision and the potential infrastructure to host the event. the task was to ensure that the stadium would not only serve as a venue for the event, but also a venue for the FIFA world cup in 2018. the scheme also helps develop the coastal resort of sochi into a first-class destination for winter sports, providing a lasting legacy for the games.

the arena offers impressive views across the park from its raised landscaped mound. the engineering systems employed will contribute towards the event’s opening and closing ceremonies, while after the games the flexible nature of the design will ensure that the venue can accommodate capacity changes.

  • I was so impressed with the design of Fisht Stadium in Sochi and the aerial track system used to move the sets. What is the name of that system? Matt Lauer of NBC talked about it and I have been searching the internet but can find no mention of it. Along with the asymmetrical design of the building it was a highlight of the Olympic opening ceremonies. I’m not an important world leader but I just wanted you to know how impressive your structure is. Congratulations!

  • Very nice harmony of colors and a successful architectural design..
    Thank you for sharing.
    King Regards.

  • I was impressed with the opening and closing ceremonies in Sochi. As a retired building designer I was also intrigued with the roof (supporting the flyers and props) plus the floor levels and ramps. Where can I find out more about how this was done? Thanks.
