westudio & MADE complete residential renovation in portugal

architecture firms westudio and MADE have renovated a family house with a private garden in the center of porto, portugal. the design prioritizes natural lighting and ventilation, generating a bright minimalist environment. the main layout is organized on a single level, while new flexible mezzanines are attached to the main rooms, allowing the occupants to explore multiple different spatial relationships within the same residence.

flexible spaces topped by a gable roof

the proposal by westudio (find more here) and MADE (find more here) changed the orientation of the existing house, turning the new spaces towards an interior garden. the garden is framed by the L-shaped configuration, with the bedrooms facing east, and the living spaces facing south. topped by a gable roof, the house is articulated through a series of fluid, adaptable spaces with added mezzanines that can be used as studies or playrooms. the relationships between spaces, sizes, and dimensions were co-designed in conversation with the family.

the interior features a minimal color palette, while wooden elements add warmth to the otherwise all-white setting.

all spaces in the house enjoy natural light: the bathrooms and circulation areas are lit by light tunnels or skylights. at the same time, the social spaces are lit by windows and a second light inlet to the west. the light is an unexpected play to the rooms with variations throughout the day. besides providing ample daylight, the extended glazing also offers unobstructed views of the courtyard, blurring the limit between inside and outside, and bringing occupants closer to nature.
