fmt estudio renovated a small old house for a couple, in the center of merida, mexico. following the client’s wish to simplify their life in a more undersized dwelling, the design team sought to make the most of the space to create a cozy environment, without giving the feeling of cramped or crowded.
the final design is therefore a neat space that accommodates all of the couple’s belongings, prioritizing the large book collection and some artworks. the designers created small corners and nooks to smartly utilize the available space, all the while adding vivid touches throughout the interior.

a cozy neat interior
apart from the spatial arrangement, the design team at fmt studio shifted its attention to maintaining the character of the original structure. since it was located in a protected area of historical context, only minor alterations were allowed. to that end, they employed integrated wooden furniture, rejuvenating the interior by allowing natural light and ventilation to penetrate.
the dining room takes shape in the covered courtyard, allowing social gatherings. there, an open sky —protected by a UV screen to prevent heat gain from the midday sun— brings plenty of light in, giving a spatial delusion that the room is bigger than it is. pops of greens from the plants give vivid hints that meet the overall cozy atmosphere.
