japanese designer kouichi kimura of form architects has recently finished the ‘small house’ for a couple in their 50’s. the restricted plot size informsa modest exterior that employs a carefully thought-out spatial organization to create the feeling of openness on the interior. a central living room with the tallest ceiling height is surrounded by the supporting program – kitchen, dining area and bedroom. lateral volumes contain built-in furniture fixtures rendered in dark polished concrete, such as the couch, that begin to add layers to the use of the main space without cluttering it, and therefore leaving a clear sight line. natural wood planks cover the floor being complimented by the light-colored pitched ceiling with a central skylight.
