Yosuke Tomiya embeds ‘Four Decks’ on a sloping plot

Yosuke Tomiya Architectural Design builds a four-deck house spreading over sloping land at the foot of a mountain in Sapporo City, Japan. In collaboration with the client, the design team identifies the ideal location, with a focus on its proximity to the workplace and a preference for a ‘skip floor’ layout.

The plot, presenting a height difference of approximately two meters, guides a design that harmoniously incorporates the natural slope within the building’s structure, shaping the foundation for cross-sectional planning. A flat exposed beam roof encompasses the space, creating an inviting indoor environment. Four interconnected floors, linked by an atrium, compose a unified space. Traversing through each level, the perspective seamlessly shifts, allowing users to immerse themselves in the distinct textures and atmospheres of each area.

versatile spaces scatter throughout the building

Surrounded by a lush natural setting, the design aims to blend the outdoors with the indoors, granting panoramic vistas of the landscape and the cityscape below through strategically placed windows. Balconies and porches, highlighted by the roof’s form and exterior colors, extend outward from the structure, reinforcing the connection between interior and exterior. This arrangement of elements ensures that the skip floor’s interior is visually conveyed from the outside.

The first floor features a spacious hall with an earthen floor that bridges the gap between the garden and the interior. The architects at Yosuke Tomiya assemble several versatile spaces scattered throughout the building, including the loft-like upper level, serving as play areas for children, study nooks, drying spaces, or guest rooms. This spatial versatility affirms the design’s commitment to accommodating a family’s diverse lifestyle.
