casa ondas extends from a terrace in the mountains

Crowned by a sequence of four roofs, Casa Ondas sits amid a small terrace in the mountains of Playa Tamarindo in Costa Rica. Embracing scenic ocean views, the residence was conceptualized by LSD Architects as an elongated structure that enhances natural cross ventilation, with two core volumes separated by an open but covered terrace. Social areas are divided from privates ones, with the house unfolding across multiple levels to optimize the plan of the terrace and its sloping terrain. The architecture, with organic geometries and earthy tones, engages in a synchronous dialogue with its natural surroundings.

lsd architect’s sequence of roofs filters in natural light

With the intention of increasing the interaction of the interior and exterior space, LSD Architects (see more here) shapes Casa Ondas’ curved silhouette with undulating parabolic rooflines that intersect the mountain. Four independent and distinctly shaped roofs overlap atop the social and private areas, unifying the program. Steel columns support the roofs with just a few lower walls, creating a large opening that brings in an abundance of natural illumination in between the roof, while scenic views of the tropics filter in through the elevation.
