fran silvestre arquitectos has designed an urban canopy that references the low-weight pergolas and porticated structures traditionally used in mediterranean cultures. envisioned as a transitional space, ‘sostre’ provides a restaurant with additional floor area as well as activating the surrounding streetscape in villarreal, spain.

when not in use, the structure does not interfere with pedestrian transit, but retains its use as a meeting point, playground or a shade to stand under. the hard-wearing metallic design does not require maintenance, while a retractable shading device can be employed to increase the project’s intimacy. additionally, the structure contains lighting, sound and air conditioning facilities establishing the project as a versatile and adaptable piece of urban furniture.
