Frank Lloyd Wright’s socrates zaferiou house now on sale

Located on the west bank of the Hudson in New York, Socrates Zaferiou House (c. 1960), a rare mid-century home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is now for sale by Sotheby’s for $1.5 million. Surrounded by a heavily wooded park with diverse wildlife, the modified one-story Usonian-style house is one of nine prefab units that the famed architect designed for Marshall Erdman in the 1950s as part of his Clausland Mountain Park development in Blauvelt. The residence presents a custom-modified floor plan, featuring an additional bedroom and a walk-out basement with high ceilings, added at Zaferiou’s request.

oversized fireplace, large windows, and signature red flooring

Set within a 2.5 acre (10,117 sqm) private site, the residence offers 2,619 sqft (243 sqm) of living space, arranged in an open L-shaped floor plan and topped with a flat roof. Some of the highlights of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Socrates Zaferiou House also include an unusual oversized brick fireplace, large windows, asymmetrical floor plans, wood paneling, and red flooring, the renowned architect’s trademark. In addition, a carport completes the dramatic residential design. Wright visited the site during the construction of the house but unfortunately passed away in 1959 before it was completed. The rest of the plans were executed by a project architect for the Guggenheim Museum of Art in New York.

‘Wright is considered one of America’s most prolific and influential architects and played an important role in the development of mid-century houses. His visionary work, which spanned more than seven decades, cemented his place as the American Institute of Architect’s ‘greatest American architect of all time.” share Agents Richard Ellis and Brandon Wagner of Ellis Sotheby’s International Realty (find more here). ‘This is a very special house that should hold a place in architectural history for its provenance and striking architectural design.’
