shail patel gives new life to discarded tires

Continuing his exploration of innovative design solutions that address social issues, Shail Patel takes on tires to visualize affordable residential apartment complexes. Generated using artificial intelligence design tool Midjourney, the From Waste to Wonder series recycles and repurposes discarded tires to facilitate sustainable architectural development in New York, while enlivening the streetscapes with playful, bold facades.

This approach, Patel poses, provides an opportunity to transform a problematic waste stream into a valuable resource, by reducing both waste and impact on the environment. Recycled tires can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of a building as a low-carbon alternative to traditional construction materials, and can further provide enhanced insulation, helping to also reduce heating and cooling costs for residents.

AI imagines sustainable construction for sculptural expressions

Shail Patel’s Midjourney-generated series employs the concept of ‘waste as a resource’ and depicts a paradigm shift in the way we think about materials and their value. Emblemizing how circular economy principles can be applied to the built environment, the architect’s recycled tire structures reveal geometric patterned facades that enliven New York streetscapes with a sculptural quality, while serving as dynamic viewpoints and windows from within.

Tires are durable, versatile, and can withstand extreme weather conditions, and thus make an ideal option for high-rise buildings. Further, their material build-up serves as an insulator, which can help to reduce heating and cooling costs for residents, while reducing impact on the environment. The process of constructing an apartment building using recycled tires involves shredding and compressing the object into building blocks or panels. These blocks can be assembled in various ways to create walls, floors, and roofs, providing a flexible and customizable construction option. The blocks can also be designed to incorporate other sustainable features, such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and green roofs, further enhancing the environmental performance of the building.
