french practice gaëlle péneau architectes associés (GPAA) has completed the redevelopment of ‘clignancourt centre’, an extension of the paris sorbonne university. in addition to providing resources for students of humanities, languages and music, the facility also functions as a public building, housing a gym, library and 500-seat auditorium. these three civic programs form the main façade of the center, differentiated through their contrasting materials.

located in a densely populated, redeveloping area of the french capital, the building uses a striking color scheme to inject a sense of life into the monotonous urban landscape. this vibrancy is continued within the center where workspaces and subject areas are chromatically organized to assist wayfinding.

internally, a compact program of space is arranged around a stepped garden filled with growing birch trees. an internal lobby adjacent to this external courtyard is important in connecting the scheme’s programs, providing access to the raised auditorium.
