estudio toribia and jacobo noriega renovated a house from the seventies deteriorated by years of poor maintenance in hermosillo, northern mexico. the residence is a spacious one-story building with wide windows and arched doors and other aesthetics that corresponded to the architectural trend of the area at that time. the transformation carried out conserves the original architectural language, preserving and reinterpreting elements such as the garage floor, where the oval-shaped footprints serve as inspiration for diverse designs integrated into the project.

estudio toribia and jacobo noriega modified the original aesthetics with new proposals to achieve a contemporary and pleasant space, with references to the history of the site and to nearby towns such as bahía de kino. few adjustments were made to the original structure such as adding more space in common areas without drastically changing the original layout.

traditional mosaics in different colors were used all over the floor in the interior to create patterns that generate visual stimulation. in addition, original glazed tiles from tlaquepaque were applied on the façade and in the kitchen in different colors. the designers believe that this will provide organic materiality and will reference the history of the construction. geometric elements such as ovals and circles in a green pale tone make up the steelwork allowing open light entries that bathe every corner.

oak is the main material that was used for the carpentry work paired with geometric motifs that were also incorporated in the design of all the interior doors, as well as the main one. the open kitchen dominates the social space with a warm and comforting atmosphere, produced by the mixture of yellow glazed tile and oak wood.

the bathroom area hosts one of the pieces with the greatest visual weight in the project: the hammered copper bathtub. it is made entirely by hand with techniques passed down from generation to generation by artisans from michoacán. the interior design is a mix of national and imported furniture along with handcrafted elements from various parts of mexico and pieces by talented emerging artists that incite an eclectic and cozy harmony.

the house is a mix of contemporary and vintage objects, as well as a careful palette that provides a youthful personality to the project. as for the outdoors, a refreshing blue tone dominates the space in addition to a selection of endemic plants that resist the high temperatures of the sonoran desert and need the least maintenance possible.
