australian architect glenn marcus murcutt has been awarded the AIA (american institute of architects) gold medal for 2009. although murcutt works exclusively in australia his work has had an influence on architecture world wide. he is known for designing ecologically and socially responsible suburban and rural homes that incorporate natural materials.

the annual AIA gold medal honors an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.
