global architects’ asymmetric rock house emerges from dune landscape in holland

global architects have shared their latest residential project ‘house as a rock’ – a contemporary and sustainable villa nestled in the dunes in southern holland. the clients requested for the architecture to be spacious with plentiful of light, while embodying a minimalist design. the challenge was the urban building requirements of the area; a gable-roofed house with the gutter measuring at a height of six meters.

the characteristic feature of the construction is the roof; it deters away from the traditional gabled shape and instead, visualizes as a sculptural form that emerges like a rock from the dunes. global architects designed each side of the house to have its own character with square and rectangular windows carved out from the monolithic exterior.

as each façade has its own character, there is not a single space inside that is the same

the residents wanted to maximize views of the surrounding nature and water, therefore large windows and two sun-rooms highlight the transition from inside to outside and render the feeling of living outdoors, regardless of the season.

home comfort and sustainable methods spearheaded the construction of the house

sand colored stone wraps the exterior and subtly blends with the dunescape. in addition to the sand stone, robust materials such as concrete and glass were chosen to complement the minimalist living spaces of the clients.
