german practice gmp architekten have created the winning proposal for the ‘city of karlsruhe medical centre’, a hospital campus in karlsruhe, germany. part of the klinikum plan, the 27,500 square meter masterplan unifies the scattered 19th century ancillary structures and previous additions with a new centralized facility.

improving the daily activities, servicing and circulation of the existing complex, the 20,500 square meter focal element, ‘haus M’, will contain 24 operating theaters, intensive care rooms and sterilization areas. supplementary wards and institutional buildings will engage into the original arrangement, demonstrating the design’s positive and sustainable integration of outmoded and state-of-the-art constructs.
