based on the winning proposal for an international design competition, gmp architekten have received the commission for the ‘kunsthalle mannheim’ in mannheim, germany. responding to the chess board layout of the encompassing urban fabric, a composition of cubes set at different heights and widths comprise the galleries and rooms. arranged within the building’s footprint and then regulated on the exterior planes with a sheer, louvered facade. the warm metal of the screen references the region’s red sandstone and radiates a strong presence in comparison to neighboring buildings. visitors are offered vistas to the surrounding context as well as inner courtyards and interstitial spaces.
