gonzalez haase AAS transforms lisbon warehouse into fashion-oriented concept store

gonzales haase AAS, a berlin-based studio for architecture, scenography, and lighting, has transformed a warehouse in portugal into an object- and fashion-oriented concept store. the building is located in the creative district of marvila, between the city center of lisbon and the grounds of expo 98. the once deserted storage halls and factory buildings of the industrial coastal suburb have been revived by art galleries, workshops, concert halls and markets, becoming a gathering spot for young pioneers of the contemporary creative scene.

the concept behind the store — named TEM-PLATE — involves spontaneously re-curating the store’s exhibition space on a monthly basis. gonzalez haase AAS responded to this by developing a flexible spatial concept that responds to the warehouse’s simple forms and surfaces. visitors enter the hall through a simple grey warehouse door before encountering a massive yellow PVC curtain that helps regulate the store’s internal climate.

the interior comprises a balance of grey, brown, and silver tones, some of which are mirrored, some of which are matte, establishing a contrast to the transparent and semi-transparent surfaces. the original concrete floors of the warehouse have been retained, sanded down, and brightened with a matte protective layer. at the back, a curtain wall of silver-grey polycarbonate divides the space into separate service areas.

the space is dotted with collections of tables, stools, benches, and partition walls, topped with untreated precious metal surfaces and plate glass paneling. seen in profile, these pieces deliberately reveal their innards, which are often composed of simple chipboard that stands in contrast to the high-quality materials used on the surface. the curtailed expressiveness and simplicity of the inventory underscores the distinctive atmosphere of the store.
