the owners of the classical-style residence in mallorca overlooking the bay approached architect guillermo reynés of local practice GRAS arquitectos in collaboration with alvaro perez to design an additional indoor pool and spa, game room, bedrooms, gym, and a general reorganization of the existing plan. the solution expressed itself as an integrated juxtaposition of annexed program and the original construction. cubic corten volumes find opportune spaces where they attach to the white-painted exterior walls, standing as a visually diverse language. each mass contains new spaces but is also arranged to re-develop the exterior landscaping most apparent at the entry sequence where the metal boxes inform additional patios and balconies welcoming visitors. the sloping tiled roof and arches of the original villa are accentuated against the orthogonal rigidity of the rich orange boxes. the pool and spa are located in a subterranean volume attached to the primary social spaces of the residence, wrapped in polished wood planks, marble floors, and a large opening with sliding glass doors that create a cozy, light-filled space. the back end of the volume cantilevers a metal roof out over a car park area next to the main entrance.
