group8: istanbul disaster prevention + education centre

with offices in geneva, switzerland and hanoi, vietnam, international practice group8 has submitted the proposal ‘epicenter’, a second prize winning entry for the istanbul disaster prevention + education centre competition. a void within the landscape, this building celebrates the effects of natural disasters within a form which integrates into the urban fabric of the city. the museum is entered from an open-air corridor which appears to be placed within a crack made in the ground. the centralized plaza becomes a location for gathering and dynamic activity serving as an extension to the interior program.

centralized plaza

placed upon three levels of internal spaces, an accessible green roof creates a vegetated boulevard for the city which symbolizes a post-disaster landscape which has regenerated nature. the structure generates three points of entry from the surrounding context, leading towards the centralized and flexible public space which may be used for exhibitions, concerts or community markets depending upon the event.
