renovated by cambridge-based hammer architects, this pool pavilion was designed by mid-century modern architects nathaniel saltonstall and oliver morton. the building was constructed as a pool house and art studio on a large estate in the chestnut hill historic district of brookline in massachusetts. using a minimalist approach, the structure is comprised of a simple post and beam steel frame.

a recent division of the property allowed the current owners to purchase the building with the intent of turning it into a two-bedroom home. working within the existing eight-foot structural grid, hammer architects created a new living room, dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms, and bathrooms inside the existing shell.

the result is a compact 158 square meter residence. to prevent the house from feeling constrained, hammer architects developed an interior plan with long lines of sight through the large walls of glass in the main living spaces. these views open to the refurbished 1950s pool, a large patio and extensive landscaping to create an airy and expansive home.
