Lucas y Hernández-Gil revamps 70s bungalow in madrid

Located in the western mountains of Madrid, near the San Juan reservoir, CASAMONTESA is a refurbished house unveiled by Lucas y Hernández-Gil. Originally part of a 1970s hotel complex, the hybrid character of the bungalow—melding highland charm with modernist elements and a touch of kitsch—has been preserved and revitalized.

Inside the residence, a multifunctional kitchen island—designed for cooking, dining, and working—anchors the space and serves as a centerpiece. Both the window frames and the island are clad in handcrafted burgundy tiles, introducing a vivid, glossy texture to the materiality of the house. Contrasting with these vibrant tiles are the earthy tones of Campaspero stone flooring and waxed, tinted plaster walls, which function as a subdued and tactile backdrop.

casamontesa expands with a satelLite pavilion

The owners of CASAMONTESA, a Spanish design-savvy urban couple, sought a functional and compact refuge within a lush garden to enjoy tranquility in a natural setting just outside the city. The Madrid-based team at Lucas y Hernández – Gil approached the project holistically, integrating architecture, interior design, and furniture to create a cohesive vision.

Key interventions include reworking the facade openings to enhance the relationship between interior and exterior spaces. The architects transformed the windows of the residence into deep frames that act as thresholds. The project also includes a satellite pavilion addition, constructed using a customized industrial agricultural greenhouse, extending the functionality of the dwelling into the garden.
