a mixed-use building designed by karim rashid forms part of a larger complex of residential properties developed by HAP in manhattan, new york. situated in east harlem, a growing urban area and close to the city’s central park, the proposal includes twenty apartments, as well as office space and commercial units at street level.

the façade allows light to softly penetrate the project’s internal living spaces

the eye-catching south wall, a façade purposed to be a ‘global billboard’ for the scheme, has been crafted to provide views of the surrounding area as well as allowing light to softly infiltrate the project’s interior. unfolding and extending across the east and west elevations, the three-dimensional pattern evokes a sense of playfulness and whimsy often associated with rashid’s work. acting as a geometric light filter, the building’s skin references traditional islamic and japanese pattern structures which have been reinterpreted through the use of computer algorithms.
