more details have been announced about ‘gasklockan’ — herzog & de meuron’s first project in sweden. in addition to apartments, the 90 meter-tall residential tower will also feature public areas, including food outlets, offices, and exhibition galleries. the new structure replaces ‘gasklocka 4’, an industrial 1930s building that for many decades supplied stockholm with energy. surrounding the tower will be a landscape created by piet oudolf.

developed by oscar properties, the project features protruding V-shaped arms that lend the scheme a dynamic appearance. ‘gasklockan is our first project in sweden and the first building with this shape,’ explains jacques herzog, herzog & de meuron. ‘its floorplan opens like the pages in a book to the surrounding city and landscape, maximizing sun exposure and offering a variety of views. it offers a spatial experience not normally experienced when living in a tower.’

in addition to its residential component, an atrium at ground level will include oscar deli (oscar properties’ new, proprietary deli concept), office space for creative businesses, and areas for curated exhibitions. meanwhile, customized solutions and services for the building’s residents include a gym with personal trainers, a cinema, a digital concierge for making cultural reservations, a children’s playroom, and assistance with food deliveries.

‘the size of gasklockan, with its 317 apartments, opens the way for a totally new type of residential service and peripheral services,’ says oscar engelbert, founder and CEO of oscar properties. ‘from the very beginning both herzog & de meuron and us have had an ambition to create a living solution of the future. we want to simplify everyday life for everyone living in the building and also create an open, creative urban space for the people of stockholm.’

reflecting gasklockan’s distinct shape and height, a vertical concept runs throughout the scheme — noticeable in wooden sections and fittings as well as bathroom’s grooved stone. ‘the interior concept in gasklockan is characterized by pure and strong materials like plaster, stone and glass — industrial, but at the same time warm and tactile,’ comments helena piehl, design manager for gasklockan at oscar properties.

located in stockholm royal seaport, gasklockan is part of northern europe’s largest urban development project. future residents will live just three kilometers (1.86 miles) from the city center, with a metro station nearby. when the development is complete, the area will host 12,000 homes and 25,000 workplaces. construction on gasklockan is planned to begin by the end of 2018, with the building is expected to welcome new occupants in 2022. apartments will go on sale in may 2018, with prices starting at SEK 4,550,000 (approx. $520,000 USD).
