herzog & de meuron-designed hospital for UC san francisco

UCSF has released the latest renderings of a new hospital that will be built at its parnassus heights campus in san francisco. designed by herzog & de meuron in collaboration with HDR architecture, the new ‘helen diller medical center’ is planned to meet the bay area’s growing medical needs. UCSF says that in 2019 alone, 3,000 patients were turned away from its campus hospitals due to a lack of beds. this new facility will increase the campus’s overall capacity from 475 beds to 682. USCF also plans to renovate its existing moffitt and long hospitals at parnassus heights to meet the projected patient demand.

the proposed 15-story hospital is articulated by a layered form with floor areas becoming incrementally smaller towards the top. the architecture by herzog & de meuron and HDR also features curtain glass walls and vertical timber cladding.

the design prioritizes patient healing and wellbeing with light-filled spaces and connection to nature. the building boasts extensive landscaping at street and upper levels as well as a publicly accessible outdoor terrace. the hospital is also in close proximity to the surrounding nature of the mount sutro open space reserve.

‘UCSF has deep roots in the city of san francisco and has grown symbiotically with the community in a neighborhood located between golden gate park and mount sutro,’ said senior partner jason frantzen of herzog & de meuron. ‘in designing this hospital, we are re-imagining the space around it, connecting park to peak to make a positive impact in people’s lives.’

the project is currently open for public comment until february 14th. UCSF expects the hospital to be approved in 2022 and construction is set to begin in 2023.
