herzog & de meuron has been chosen to develop a new urban quarter in the city of basel. the firm’s masterplan for nordspitze — the northern tip of the formerly industrial dreispitz area — was chosen ahead of six submissions for its ‘density of construction in combination with generous open spaces’, with a mix of residential skyscrapers and city parks. the development of the site seeks to bring an expanded set of gastronomic, educational, leisure and living activities to the area.

together with the christoph merian foundation, migros, and the city of basel, herzog & de meuron will work to create a unique identity for the triangle of land that encompasses nordspitze. park land, accessible roof areas and two high-quality green spaces form the heart of the project, while three skyscrapers — with a circular floor plan and mixed use programming — intend to allow for a range of apartment sizes, prices, and scales.

‘the proposal of herzog & de meuron ensures the further development of one of our most important points of sale in the face of changing market conditions and changing customer needs.’ says stefano patrignani, managing director of migros cooperative basel.

‘the chance to work on this project is of particular significance for us,’ continues herzog & de meuron. ‘it will give us a chance to further manifest the ideas we generated together with rémy zaugg in ‘eine stadt im werden?’ in 1991, and our investigations in ‘vision dreispitz’ in 2001.’
