Apostolopoulos Tasoulis renovates stone market in paphos

Greek architectural practice Apostolopoulos Tasoulis completes the restoration and expansion of a historic stone market in Paphos, adding a nearly white concrete structure to house a Youth Entrepreneurship Center. Designed to revitalize a traditional Khan typology—an enclosed market organized around an open-air courtyard—the project combines preservation and new construction to enhance community engagement. The expanded complex creates a public green space accessible to the city, with new building volumes positioned along the perimeter of the site to align with the existing structure and respect its scale.

the Youth Entrepreneurship Center features a green core

The Athens-based team at Apostolopoulos Tasoulis reveals the historical layers of the market during the restoration process: plaster surfaces are stripped to expose local stone, and later additions that blocked original openings are removed. This process uncovers large vertical voids, now enclosed in glass, connecting the interior to the surrounding public areas. The new structure maintains a respectful distance from the street, extending the facade and creating a public square that links the inner courtyards with the adjacent urban landscape. Designed with a single-level layout, the new spaces wrap around a central green core, subdivided into smaller volumes that echo the scale of the historic market and nearby residential buildings. Through this thoughtful intervention, the concrete addition complements and modernizes the existing market complex, establishing a distinct identity.
