japanese practice hitoshi sugishita architect and associates has completed a residential property in a quiet suburban region of aichi. entitled ‘yatsuya house’, the dwelling allows its occupants to continue their close relationship with their parents, who live on the opposite side of the street.

the obtusely angled roof features low eaves that afford the property a discreet and unobtrusive profile. upon entering the structure, guests are met with a transitional porch sheltered by the overhanging canopy. this area of the design references similar types of spaces found in buddhist temples and shinto shrines, and the subsequent physical journey through them. daylight fills the home’s living quarters with walls clad in white stucco and furnishings finished in pale natural timbers.
