in a suburb of hanoi city, hoang minh has designed a contemporary house for a vietnamese diplomat. the main concept was to create interactive spaces within a residence that transforms the traditional agricultural houses of northern vietnam. as a result, different blocks have been combined to play off of the transition between the large, existing green garden and daily human activities. each form follows its interior functions, appropriating necessary amounts of sunlight and reducing the amount of wasted volume. throughout the main common areas, inhabitants have been given glimpses of the surrounding shrubs, pond, and exterior circulation paths. the dwelling consists of reused materials from the demolished house such as bricks, local stones, and terracotta tiles, all of which are constantly visible in reference to the vernacular methods of construction. these solutions have reduced costs and minimized the amount of environmental impact on the site. in the heart of the complex, a traditional gabled roof covers a sacred object – an ancient vietnamese wooden structure programmed as a multipurpose room for political gatherings, social activities, and cultural holidays.
