positioned within an uncharacteristically large plot of land, naoi architecture & design office has completed a a residence for a family of four in a suburban area of japan’s ibaraki prefecture. ‘house with a large hipped roof’ forms a primarily one level dwelling which is open to the surrounding neighborhood. the expansive roof canopy is constructed from timber girders and rafters, lending the home its distinctive shape.

at ground level a master bedroom, bathroom and dining area are positioned around a spacious open-plan living room, which connects the scheme. the flexible lounge can be subdivided with sliding doors, offering options for both private and communal living. this part of the home references traditional japanese folk houses which are composed in a similar manner. the southern façade forms a glazed opening – allowing inhabitants views of the sky, while through the northern aperture, sunlit greenery can be seen under the low eaves.

the structure takes on a mountainous form, a homage to the undulating landscape that was lost during the site’s development. ‘house with a large hipped roof’ is envisioned as a catalyst for the region, helping establish a better community atmosphere where people and nature are able to co-exist.
