portuguese practice [i]da arquitectos has recently completed ‘DJ house’, a residence in carcavelos, portugal. although a rectilinear and subtle elevation surfaced with white plaster addresses the street, the inhabitant is presented with a new perspective as they approach the front door. the internal composition reveals itself, presenting four stories of living spaces which wrap around a central patio. spanning from the subterranean level to the roof terrace, an open air courtyard which divides this residence in half connects rooms with outdoor stairways across the void.

positioned along the western side and bordering the garden on the lowest level, a horizontal space contains the kitchen and dining area while the living room is to the east. white and gray surfaces in combination with large panes of glass minimize the sense of enclosure between the outdoor courtyard while introducing natural illumination into the furthest depths of the basement floor.
