'I like design studio' plans MP house around a lush internal courtyard in bangkok

situated in bangkok‘s chuan chuen park ville village, ‘I like design studio’ has created MP house for a client looking for a small, compact residence. built on the same site that was previously home to the client’s parents, the former building was demolished in order to make way for the new intervention. constructed with a rectilinear plan, the scheme is characterized by the internal courtyard, which functions to bring an abundance of light and nature into the house.

the program of the house is divided by the architect into two parts with regard to the differing requirements. the first part is the owner’s residence, comprising of a living room, dining room, pantry and thai kitchen on the first floor. the master bedroom, children’s bedroom, working room and music room can be found on the upper floor. the second part of the MP house is designed for the parents or guests who may visit the family. separated from the main house, yet still connected by a common area, the slight division provides a suitable amount of privacy.

the outward facing elevations are designed with few windows in order to reduce the amount of external heat entering the house. however, upon entering into the house, a generous inner courtyard creates a natural atmosphere in the center of the building. this ‘natural court’ can be viewed from every room and facilitates to ventilate spaces while also bringing in natural light and forging a direct relationship to nature.

the outdoor area also includes a terrace for the family to relax on, which can be connected to the living room and children’s room. the green space also continues as you ascend the house. accessed via a floating steel staircase, there is a garden and balcony on the 2nd floor. designed with emphasis on privacy, the space is cut off from the external environment by a high wall, leaving only a tree, seats and the sky.
