the ‘iceberg skating palace’ forms a central part of the sochi 2014 olympic games, hosting figure skating and short track speed skating events. the scheme has been designed by GUP MNIIP mosproject-4, the ‘moscow research and design institute for culture, leisure, sports and health care buildings’. containing 12,000 seats positioned across two tiers, the multi-purpose arena has already successfully hosted major events.

externally the games’ branding and color scheme is referenced in the shades of blue used, while the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains and the waves of the black sea are reflected in the structure’s sweeping form. the flexible nature of the design means that it takes only two hours to adjust the ice field – switching between figure skating and short track configurations. after the event, the arena’s training rink is due to be transported to stavropol, providing a high-quality facility for the inland city.

the venue is situated in the ‘coastal cluster’ of venues within sochi’s olympic park, which also features ‘fisht stadium’ the venue which will host the opening and closing ceremonies.
