japanese office id has designed ‘sumiyoshido kampo lounge’, a clinic for acupuncture and moxibustion. the center is a new shape of herbal pharmacy, where the doctor prescribes based on oriental medicine and those who are willing to take herbal remedies can learn more about its traditions.

the functions of pharmacies have required the utilization of shelving systems to organize their supplies. ‘although furnishings with many drawers are supposed to be filled with medicine, we felt that they are also filled with a history and deep knowledge of their contents,’ say the designers. accordingly, the boxes are lined and stacked neatly in a way that displays samples with their aromas and textures.

accompanying these built-in features for a uniform expression, the studio also constructed light fixtures, desks, and sofas for counseling sessions. the space’s defining coat mint green freshly expresses a therapeutic world derived from plants. the soft color is intended to create a curiously ambivalent atmosphere in which the heaviness and lightness of furniture coexist.

in contrast, the private areas for operations seamlessly transform into white walls and beds. thick drape curtains help patients relax by softening the impressions and connotations that are typically associated with examination rooms.

taking advantage of its wide opening frame, the office was conceived as a large show window. the main programs are clearly separated by a waiting room to indicate the different purposes. the interior is finished by a series of logos and graphic tools that have also been envisioned by the architects.
