on the croatian island of krk, local practice turato architecture has completed a summer house that presents sweeping views of the surrounding rural landscape. the new structure is built adjacent to a previously existing ‘gumno’ – a circular plateau surrounded by a low stone wall – from which the dwelling takes its name.

originally, gumnos were places of both labor and public congregation, where villagers would thresh grain and meet to discuss important issues. rather than replace the structure, the design team decided that the existing structure should be restored, consequently forming the centerpiece of the property’s gardens where the family could meet with guests, friends and other members of the local community.

internally, the dwelling accommodates the three primary wishes of the clients. the first is a rustic cellar, which serves as a wine and oil storage space, that doubles as a place for gatherings. the second is a spacious glazed living room intended as a communal setting for the property’s residents. finally, a large irregularly shaped pool with views of the sea sits in front of the property. on top of the house there are four independent units with intimate terraces, and a quiet sleeping area for each member of the family.
