bjarke ingels’ LEGO house, a transparent pharmacy, and a dramatic escalator installation are all on the shortlist for the world interior of the year 2018. INSIDE world festival of interiors, the global interior design and architecture awards program, has announced the shortlist of 77 projects that will compete to be crowned at this year’s ceremony in amsterdam. projects from across the globe were entered across nine different categories, ranging from health and educational buildings to hotels, bars, restaurants, and residential homes. the event is hosted alongside the 2018 world architecture festival (WAF).

shortlisted designers for the INSIDE world festival of interiors come from all corners of the world, including wimberly interiors (UK/global), genius loci (indonesia), bjarke ingels group (denmark), studio chris fox (australia), and shanwei weng (china). fenghemuchen space design (china) and department of architecture co. (thailand) were among those with the most shortlisted projects, while the largest number of projects within the shortlist are based in china, followed by australia and taiwan respectively.

a highlight of this year’s shortlist is BIG’s LEGO house. a life-size re-creation of the traditional brick home, the 23-metre-tall structure has been designed as an immersive experience center. shortlisted for one of the best creative re-use projects is nocenco café by vietnamese practice VTN architects. this renovation project includes a café on the rooftop of a 7-floor concrete building, which has been transformed into a local landmark at the center of vinh city.

meanwhile, studio chris fox, has been shortlisted in the display category for its innovative ‘interloop’ design, which sits above the main entrance of sydney’s wynard station. made from re-used 1930s escalator treads, the project measures more than 50 metres in length, weighs more than five tonnes, and weaves in 244 wooden treads and four combs from the original escalators. in the civic, culture and transport category, wimberly interiors have been shortlisted for their belmond venice simplon-orient-express project which features art deco interiors.

all nominees will present their projects to international juries during the festival to compete for one of the nine INSIDE category awards. open to all festival attendees, the presentations are followed by a live exchange between the designers and jurors. the overall winner of the ‘world interior of the year’ will be announced at on november 30, 2018 at the beurs van berlage. the full list of shortlisted projects can be found here.
