by organizing eight studio apartments in an interlocking configuration, japanese architect tsuyoshi shindo of be fun design has created ‘isogo house’. the arrangement allows each unit to have outdoor space, either on a ground level patio or rooftop deck. the complex includes four legible volumes, with two of which united at a common corner, while the remaining two stand alone. the buildings are comprised of two stories and located on a sloping site, with some floors placed partially into the ground.

each apartment unit contains space on both of the two floors, with a loft space situated between. spiral staircases function as the primary vertical circulation, while ladders serve to access lofts and roof decks. the interlocking configuration seeks to balance a necessary privacy with desired social interaction between residents.
