together with new york-based practice leong leong and artist john baldessari, iwamotoscott architecture was commissioned to design the ‘city view garage’ in miami’s design district. the building is sited along the I195 freeway at edge of the region, and consequently serves as a billboard for the area.

the main body of the building is a parking structure – which includes a small six storey office block – positioned above a level of retail outlets. iwamotoscott’s portion of the façade wraps around the main corner of the garage, encompassing an elevator lobby, an external stairway and the aforementioned offices.

so that mechanical intervention would not be required, the design team employed a digitally-fabricated metal screen with folded aluminum modules that promote natural ventilation. the screen, which features a gradient coloration pattern, is suspended from a series of fins cantilevering from the edges of the garage’s concrete slabs.

  • I have just returned from Miami, and this parking garage was one of the contemporary architectural highlights.

It offers a true signpost to the Design District, (which for this out-of-towner proved quite difficult to find) and looked great when passed at speed on the Interstate. Well done Iwamotoscott
