the renovation of rio’s art museum forms part of a major urban redevelopment in the city’s historic downtown region. completed by bernardes + jacobsen arquitetura, the project unifies the site’s existing buildings, with a dilapidated palace and a formerly disused police station showcasing the gallery’s extensive collection, in addition to housing a school and a variety of new cultural and leisure spaces.

due to its ceiling height and open-plan spatial accommodation, the palace hosts the museum’s exhibition areas. the school and administrative offices are located in the old police station, where opaque masonry has been replaced with translucent glazed façades.

a unifying roof plane connects the two buildings, forming new volumes beneath its undulating form. above the police station, a rooftop courtyard is capable of hosting cultural events and offering panoramic views across the city.
