built for a couple with different interests and hobbies, JB house by IDIN architects features two main activity areas divided in two floors, one for each resident. while ensuring enough privacy, the house is designed in such a way that the couple can still acknowledge each other’s presence all the time, even from their own area.

the thailand-based studio has divided the house’s two floors according to the couple’s individual interests: the ground floor for the husband, who is fond of baking and taking photographs, so his main activities take place at the kitchen island; and the upper floor for the wife, who works in publishing and loves to draw, and thus wanted a large working table for reading and writing. the two main functions are placed on top of each other vertically, with the glass on the working tabletop creating a visual connection with the kitchen island below, and allowing the couple to see each other while performing their own activities. furthermore, the upper floor has been designed to have three connecting steps that separate it from the guest area, without disrupting the connection between the owners’ private spaces. most walls of the upper floor double as bookshelves, catering to the wife’s love of books, while above them, skylights provide plenty of natural light along the shelves. on the exterior, upper areas are covered in double wood screens that can be opened or closed for privacy and heat protection, whilst a gap between the openings ensures enough space in case of maintenance.
