architecture can be described as the relationship between interior and exterior form. typically a representation of desire by architect or inhabitant, what happens when the home creates its own sense of style, of subjectiveness? jeff halstead’s ‘glass house’ describes an agitated relationship that comes to head in a collapsing of sequence between internal and external. by doing so, it is hoped that something both dream-like and psycho-projective will occur. meaning, essentially, that the house will take on an altered sense of ‘self’, commenced by the displacement of one or the other.

in david lynch’s 1997 film ‘lost highway’, the main character escapes his difficult reality by imagining the events of his life differently. near the beginning, he pictures himself lying beside his wife in bed — while, in reality he’s awaiting execution for her murder. in the scene, he turns to look at his wife’s face. though when he does, he sees not her, but the face of a ‘mystery man’. this unknown image is a projection of his own jealousy towards her (i.e. why he killed her to begin with). both dream-like and psycho-projective, the simultaneously occurring reality is precisely what halstead intends with ‘glass house’.

states of disfigurement between exterior and interior form allow for it — the home — to express a sense of self, neutralizing the designer and occupant in favor of its own architectural attitude. the glass collapses, in each instance altering the levels of resolution and opacity of the structure and re-configuring the understanding of proximity, form, and interior.
